From the Principal Kia ora koutou. Welcome to the last three days of the school year and my very last school newsletter. It has been an extremely busy last couple of weeks and quite an emotional time as you can imagine. I have certainly had the most memorable send-off from the board, staff and students of the school with last Friday’s assembly and I thank all parents who were in attendance, not only for their children’s Quality Award, but also for my farewell. I am truly going to miss you all. New Appointments for 2023 We are pleased to announce the appointment of Carly Barnes as Deputy Principal at Fairhall School from the start of Term 1, 2023. Carly will be teaching in the Year 4-5 class. Carly has been teaching for 13 years and is currently at Bohally Intermediate. In her time as Bohally she has taken on additional responsibilities, including: Acting DP, Hub Leader, ORS teacher, Within School Lead & Across School Lead, leading Deeper Learning (DLPD), Te Ao Māori & Curriculum development, and EOTC responsibility across the school. We are confident that Carly will be a great addition to our team. Carly is committed to developing positive relationships with children, staff, whānau and the wider community, and is looking forward to joining Fairhall School. Quality Awards Congratulations to all students who have received a Quality Award for 2022 and especially to those students who received their awards last Friday, as their celebration was slightly side-tracked. The awards are such an important act of recognition to our students who strive to put themselves on the Pathway to Excellence. Congratulations on a successful year. Year 8 Graduation This evening the Year 8 students will be holding their Graduation Dinner. This will be a formal event for the students, their families and senior school staff. The dinner will be followed up with a Whole School Graduation Assembly on Thursday starting at 1.30pm. Farewell Mr. Sangster We say farewell to our long serving teacher, Deputy Principal, colleague and friend, Aaron Sangster. After 10 years of service to Fairhall School Aaron begins his new Pathway to Excellence, as newly appointed principal at Ward School. I had many memorable years as principal of this wonderful country school and I’m sure Aaron is going to be able to share in a similar experience. Aaron will certainly be missed from the Fairhall School community, but we know his friendship will be everlasting. All the best Aaron. Last Day School finishes at 12.15pm this Friday, the first bus will leave at 12.15pm. I want to wish you all a safe and happy Christmas and New Year / holiday break. Enjoy some quality family / whānau time together and have a truly pleasant and positive return to school in 2023.Ngā mihi nui Steve Crockett Tumuaki / Principal From the Board of Trustees Kia ora koutou It’s hard to believe it’s that time of year again, and what a year it has been (again). Thank you to all for supporting our students, our staff and our wider community throughout yet another busy year. Despite no further COVID closures there was still a lot of illness and related disruption. A massive thank you to all staff for all you have done throughout 2022. We acknowledge your hard work, your tolerance, and your care for our children. We are super proud of your collective achievements and for all you do every day for our kids. At the end of each year, we take the opportunity to thank and farewell our Year 8 students. It’s been a pleasure to watch them step up in their final year at Fairhall, especially in terms of their leadership and support of their fellow students. We wish all our leavers the very best for their next challenge at secondary school – and we look forward to hearing about their future endeavours. Please join us on Thursday afternoon for the School Prize-giving where we officially farewell these students. Thank you to all that were able to attend last Friday’s special farewell assembly for our Principal, Steve Crockett. Each class performed an amazing presentation, the Kapa Haka group smashed out a rousing haka, and Mr Crockett finished the day strumming his guitar and leading the entire school singing that old Fairhall favourite song The Green Grass Grew All Around. Mr Crockett also presented the school with a beautiful Graham Taylor panorama painting of the Tongariro Crossing. Thank you once again Steve for all you have done for our school over you 14 years here. We wish you and Rosemary all the very best, you will be missed! We also say a fond farewell to our Deputy Principal Aaron Sangster. Aaron has been a passionate and dedicated member of our Fairhall staff for 10 years, and his loyalty and enthusiasm for everything Fairhall will be greatly missed – as will his countless signature selfies out front of numerous school group photos. Aaron leaves us to take up his first Principal role at Ward School and we wish him all the very best for this well-deserved opportunity. With Aaron’s departure we are excited to announce the appointment of Carly Barnes as our new Deputy Principal commencing Term 1 next year. Carly has been teaching for 13 years, and for the past 5 years at Bohally Intermediate. In addition to her DP responsibilities, Carly will be teaching years 4&5 in Te Rūma Kauri. As previously announced, we look forward to welcoming our new Principal, Debbie Stanger, who will join us from the beginning of Term 1 next year when her initial focus will be all about establishing relationships and getting to know our staff, students and our community. Having a new Principal and Deputy Principal both commencing next year is a significant change for our school and I have absolute confidence that both Debbie and Carly will be a great fit for Fairhall. Katie Bradley, will continue on the leadership team and in a second acting DP role for the first term. We also congratulate Olivia MacDonald, who graduates as a fully registered teacher. Olivia has already made a great impression over the last couple of years at Fairhall and we are very pleased to welcome her into her new permanent teaching role. Finally, a big thank you to our current school board of trustees Anna O’Hagan, Rachel Roundhill, Clive Dougall, Matt Flight and teacher rep Michael Stringer. Also a massive thanks to Friends of Fairhall School (FOFS), and everyone else that volunteers their time in support of our school. Without you, the school would not run as smoothly, or be such a great place. Thank you! Meri Kirihimete and have a safe and enjoyable holiday break! Ngā mihi nui Steve Ross Fairhall BOT Reminder Notices Reminder End of Year Graduation This year we will be holding a whole-school graduation ceremony in Te Whare Kahikatea on the second to last day of school, Thursday 15 December at 1.30pm. This will be our final celebration of the school year and our official farewell to our Year 8 students. An open invitation to all extended family members is being offered. Our Year 8’s will be having a Graduation Dinner on the Wednesday evening prior to our final assembly. This is an event specifically for our Year 8 students and their immediate family. Reminder Food Bank and Marlborough 4 Paws Donations We like to contribute to the wider community at this time of year and so we ask that each student bring in an item to be donated to either the Foodbank or, this year we have included, Marlborough 4 Paws, a non for-profit organisation that helps out unwanted cats and dogs in our region. The donations have always been greatly received. All items need to be non-perishable please and festive items would be appreciated. Donations can be handed into the office or class teacher Kia ora e te whānau I just wanted to write a quick note to say thank you for all the messages of support and kind words I have received in recent weeks. It is with mixed emotions that I finish up this week after 10 years of working at Fairhall School. I will definitely miss the fantastic people that make up our Fairhall community and the amazing opportunities that Fairhall provides its tamariki. However I am also excited to take on a new adventure as I continue to advance my career in education with the role of Principal at Ward School. The collective memories and experiences I have had at Fairhall have shaped who I am as a teacher and school leader. I mentioned on Friday a huge thanks to Mr Crockett who has been a fantastic mentor and role model for me. However I have to thank all of my wonderful colleagues and students who I have worked with over the years for everything they have contributed to my career so far. Lastly I have to thank my fantastic wife Sandra and my boys Harley and Grayson who have been absolutely amazing at supporting me in making some very difficult decisions! This isn’t strictly the end of my time at Fairhall. I will continue to be a member of the parent community as I see my boys finish their primary schooling. Ka Kite Ano!
