School Newsletter Term 4 Week 8

December 7 By Alistair

From the Principal
Kia ora koutou.
Welcome to the penultimate week of the school year. This week we have new entrant students visiting for their start in 2023. Our seniors are reflecting on a wonderful time they had last week in the Abel Tasman National Park and tomorrow our blue team will be out in the afternoon taking part in their athletic sports. Let’s hope the weather improves.

Abel Tasman Tramp
Our Year 8 students returned from their week long tramp and camp in the Abel Tasman national Park. They had pretty much fantastic weather all week and came back with beaming smiles on their faces. Well done to all students and a huge thank you to the parent helpers who support our staff who attended.

School Reports
Teachers are finalising their student reports for the 2022 school year. These will be sent home on Tuesday to all parents. There will be some students who have not been at Fairhall School for too long and therefore will not receive a report. Teachers will inform parents if this is the case. The reports are an ‘end of year’ teacher judgement on where your child is currently at in relation to the New Zealand Curriculum Learning levels. This is explained on the report. As a school we use this data to help with our planning for 2023 in terms of targeted support for student learning.

Staff Appointments for 2023
With the departure of Aaron Sangster to Ward School next year, your new principal, Debbie Stanger, will be working alongside Acting Deputy Principal, Katie Bradley and the Board of Trustees to appoint a new second Deputy Principal to Fairhall School for the start of the 2023 school year. The new appointment will be an integral member of the leadership team here at Fairhall School and this will be announced to you as soon as it can be made available. We congratulate Katie Bradley who is stepping into this shared responsibility role for 2023.

We welcome back Amanda Gorham who will be returning part-time from Maternity/Parental leave.

Class Structures and Teachers for the 2023 School Year
Next year we will continue to operate composite classes throughout the school and our class structures and teachers to these classes are as follows:

Te Rūma Horoeka – Year 7&8 – Teacher: Lynne Fitzpatrick
Te Rūma Nīkau – Year 7&8 – Teachers: Briony Boulton (Mon-Wed), Anne Taylor (Thurs/Fri)
Te Rūma Tōtara – Year 5&6 – Olivia MacDonald
Te Rūma Kauri – Year 4&5 – (New DP to Be Appointed)
Te Rūma Rātā – Year 3&4 – Michael Stringer
Te Rūma Pōhutukawa – Year 2&3 – Vicky Hawes (Mon-Wed), Amanda Gorham (Thurs/Fri)
Te Rūma Harakeke – Year 1&2 – Juliette Miller
Te Rūma Kōwhai – NE – Katie Bradley (Acting DP / Blue Team Leader)
The teachers have been working closely together in placing students into classes for the new year. The focus is on what we consider is the best decision for each child. These placements are also overseen by the leadership team. If you have any information about your child that you would like to share with the school please discuss this with either Katie Bradley (Blue Team), Aaron Sangster (Gold Team) or myself.

From the School Prospectus
I wish to take this opportunity to remind parents of the school procedures for any concerns or complaints made by parents to the school. This is the excerpt taken from our school prospectus. Please read.

Concerns or Complaints
Hopefully there will be few causes for concern or complaint.  However, from time to time these do arise. If for some reason you have a concern or complaint to make, please contact the school to make an appointment to discuss the matter. Issues regarding your child’s learning and class related issues should be made to your child’s teacher. Issues relating to school programmes and management decisions should be made to the Principal.

All complaints, which cannot be resolved after the teacher concerned has been consulted, should be referred to the Principal. If after discussion with the Principal you remain unsatisfied with the outcome you are invited to write to the chairperson of the school Board of Trustees.

While the use of email is the current, quick way of communicating it can also be the most damaging and ineffective. Please avoid this method as a way of delivering a complaint. Use it as a means of requesting a meeting.

In keeping an open and positive means of communication we will ensure the best opportunities for growth and development of your children will be maximised.
Something to remember is: ‘If we are doing well, tell others. If we are not – tell us’.

Reminder Notices
Reminder Food Bank and Marlborough 4 Paws Donations
We like to contribute to the wider community at this time of year and so we ask that each student bring in an item to be donated to either the Foodbank or, this year we have included, Marlborough 4 Paws, a non for-profit organisation that helps out unwanted cats and dogs in our region. The donations have always been greatly received. All items need to be non-perishable please and festive items would be appreciated.  Donations can be handed into the office or class teachers.

Reminder – End of the School Day – Junior / Senior Playground
It is wonderful seeing parents and whānau come back into the school grounds after school to visit classrooms, reconnect with their children’s teachers and view student’s learning. We do ask, however, that you keep your children with you and not allow them to play on the adventure playground. We do not have teachers on duty after school and so only allow bus students to use the main field and tennis courts until the second bus bell rings at around 3.05PM, all other students are expected to be collected after the 2:30 bell.Reminder – Fairhall School App

FAIRHALL PRIDE  Pathway to EXCELLENCE

School Goals
Our school goals for Term Four focus on the PRIDE values of Integrity and Enjoyment.

The goals are:

At Fairhall School we are learning when to lead, when to follow, when to compete and when to cooperate. (Integrity)

and

At Fairhall School we are learning to recognise and celebrate success (Enjoyment).

The school goals relate to our curriculum topics and at the end of each term we will be looking to celebrate with students who have achieved this goal.

 School Wide Whakataukī
Each term our kura (school) has a whakataukī that aligns with our school inquiry focus. A whakataukī translates to whakatau (to settle) and kī (say), say something to settle. These proverbs are motivational and offer a unique way to reflect on our place and what we do.

This term our school whakatuakī is:
Me mahi tahi tātou mō te oranga o te katoa
We should work together for the well-being of everyone

We unpack these whakatuakī at school and relate it back to what we do/can do.
