From the Principal Kia ora koutou. Welcome back to the start of the fourth and final term of the school year. We also welcome new students and families who have joined us for the first time. A warm welcome also goes to Tracy Holdaway who joins our support staff team. This term is going to get real busy. We have a full programme of learning and extra curricular activities, as well as, Labour Day, Marlborough Anniversary and a ‘Teacher Only Day’ thrown in the mix. Hold on to your hats! Year 5 and 6 Camp – Mistletoe Bay Our Year 5 and 6 students returned at the end of last term following a successful camp to Mistletoe Bay, one of our favourite camping destinations. A huge thank you to all parent helpers who gave up their time to support this camp and to teachers Briony Boulton and Anne Taylor for the effort they put in to organise the fantastic trip away. SHOW DAY This Friday sees the return of Show day at Fairhall School. Like the Harcourts Marlborough Kids Duathlon this event was cancelled due to COVID -19 for the past two years. It is wonderful to see this important part of our school calendar being brought back to life! Taiopenga We are pleased to have our kapa haka back up and running after a year’s disruption due to COVID -19. Last year’s Taiopenga was cancelled but we are happy to be back performing alongside other schools across Marlborough for 2022. Our performance takes place next Wednesday at 10.15AM and will take place at the Marlborough Girls’ College hall. Graduation / End of Year Celebrations Last year amongst COVID level restrictions the school held a farewell graduation assembly for our Year 8 students as well as a Prize-Giving Dinner for our Year 8 families. This year Deputy Principal, Aaron Sangster, surveyed the community to gather feedback on options for this year’s Graduation ceremony. As a result we had a large majority of parents and students choose to repeat last year’s programme and so we will once again hold a prize-giving dinner for our Y8 students and their families followed by a farewell graduation acknowledgement at school in Te whare Kahikatea. We will provide further information closer to the time. Teacher Only Day We are holding a Teacher Only Day on Friday 28 October. Staff will be at school to work on school-wide planning and reporting. The school will be closed on this day. We hope you will be able to take advantage of this extra long weekend attached to Marlborough Anniversary. A Marvelous Mural Our initial PRIDE mural, designed and painted by senior students back in 2010, just didn’t stand the test of time but fortunately inspiration and drive from a group of our current senior students along with teachers Michael Stringer and Olivia Macdonald, as well as, local artist, Sean Duffell we now have a fabulous new mural erected and painted on to the eastern wall of Te Rūma Rātā. Well done to all who were involved, another proud occasion for Fairhall School. Also a special thank you to parent Andy Fitzpatrick for giving up his time to erect the plyboard to the wall. The new mural with just a few final touches to be added. A Golden Surprise Te Rūma Rātā were treated to a surprise visitor this morning with Olympic Rowing 8 Gold Medallist, Thomas Mackintosh, visiting the class. Thomas talked to the students about his winning race as part of the NZ Olympic 8 crew and about the Olympic spirit which covers a number of our Fairhall PRIDE values. Ngā mihi nui Steve Crockett Principal Reminder Notices Reminder – End of the School Day – Junior / Senior Playground It is wonderful seeing parents and whānau come back into the school grounds after school to visit classrooms, reconnect with their children’s teachers and view student’s learning. We do ask, however, that you keep your children with you and not allow them to play on the adventure playground. We do not have teachers on duty after school and so only allow bus students to use the main field and tennis courts until the second bus bell rings at around 3.05PM, all other students are expected to be collected after the 2:30 bell. Reminder – Fairhall School App Have you got our Fairhall School App? This can help with keeping up to date on what’s happening at Fairhall and when. Users receive notifications, access to our school newsletters, calendar dates and school contacts. Check out our app features HERE. Download the SchoolAppsNZ now – visit Google Play Store. Once you have downloaded the SchoolAppsNZ – you then search for Fairhall School. Reminder – School donation Each year we ask parents to pay a donation to the school. The donation is $220 per child and can be paid in contribution amounts over the school year or in one lump sum. Your donation helps the school in purchasing resources and hiring personnel to assist with our overall school programmes. In advance I thank you for your contribution. We are privileged to have such a supportive school community in this area of financial support. FAIRHALL PRIDE Pathway to EXCELLENCE School Goals Our school goals for Term Four focus on the PRIDE values of Integrity and Enjoyment. The goals are: At Fairhall School we are learning when to lead, when to follow, when to compete and when to cooperate. (Integrity) and At Fairhall School we are learning to recognise and celebrate success (Enjoyment). The school goals relate to our curriculum topics and at the end of each term we will be looking to celebrate with students who have achieved this goal. School Wide Whakataukiī Each term our kura (school) has a whakataukī that aligns with our school inquiry focus. A whakataukī translates to whakatau (to settle) and kī (say), say something to settle. These proverbs are motivational and offer a unique way to reflect on our place and what we do. This term our school whakatuakī is:Me mahi tahi tātou mō te oranga o te katoa We should work together for the well-being of everyone We unpack these whakatuakī at school and relate it back to what we do/can do.
