From the Principal Kia ora koutou. Welcome to Week 9 This week we are extremely busy with a number of activities that take place within school, as well as, beyond the school gate. With Monday 26 September being a public holiday this is a reminder that school will be closed on this day. I would also like to remind you that we have a staff / Teacher Only Day coming up next term as well. Please mark your calendars for Friday 28 October as the school will be closed for teacher planning and reporting. Dance Curriculum What a way to finish the week off last Friday. We had a wonderful turnout of parents at our final Dance Curriculum performance day and parents were treated to a range of dances from all students across the school year groups. Thank you for showing up and supporting this biennial event. Whānau hui We had a successful whānau hui held last Monday and there was sharing of the huge progress made under the guidance of our school’s Cultural Diversity team. The hui certainly did celebrate what has already been achieved since its inception last year. I’d like to thank the whānau who attended and acknowledge the work that is being led by teachers Michael Stringer, Katie Bradley, Olivia MacDonald and Vicky Hawes. Festival of Hockey We have a group of year 3 and 4 students taking part in a Festival of Hockey tomorrow and will be out of school with teacher, Michael Stringer, for this event. We wish the students well. Harcourts Marlborough Kids Duathlon All is set to go for the Harcourts Marlborough Kids Duathlon this coming Sunday. We have a team of helpers with the set-up on Saturday afternoon and a larger team of helpers set for the event. This is taking place tomorrow afternoon and we are sending three student representatives from Fairhall School: Logan Planthaber, Blake Hawtin and Florence Jackson-Hoare, supported by Deputy Principal, Aaron Sangster. Ngā mihi nui Steve Crockett Principal Update for Community Oral Health Service – a message from the Community Oral Health Service We hope all is well in your school community during so many challenges for everyone. A number of other factors are continuing to have an impact on the timeliness of Oral health Care for the tamariki/children of Nelson/ Marborough. Our unprecedented shortage of Dental and Oral health Therapists is the most inhibiting factors for services. We are working to secure more therapists however this is challenging in a period of a national shortage of trained oral health professionals. A number of strategies remain in place to make the most of opportunities available to us to keep wait times for tamariki/children to a minimum. Mobile Clinics The Wairau mobile is still off road for repairs and a COVID19 upgrade since late 2021 and we hope this is resolved soon. The Nelson area mobile continues to operate but at reduced capacity. We continue to prioritise the most outlying areas for the mobile service where access to town clinics is the most difficult. All whanau/families will be contacted by the nearest hub and alternative clinic appointments will be offered. We’ll endeavour to work with whanau/families from outlying areas to find a time that coincides with trips to town centres. Our usual annual calendar continues to change due to constraints so we will endeavour to remain in contact with schools as the plan evolves. Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any concerns in regard to the mobile service. Early Discharge Year 7 & 8 children A large number of private dentists continue to take over the care of Year 7 & 8 children instead of the usual transfer to private dentists at Year 9. Our clinics will be in touch with families as appointments come due (or are overdue) to make arrangements for those who wish to take up this option. Please work with your Community Oral Health Hub in the first instance to get this arrangement underway. Saturday Clinics Some of our team have kindly offered their time on Saturdays as an option for appointments. This is a very limited service and will be offered where it is available. Urgent Care As is our normal practice if your child has urgent needs please be in touch with your nearest clinic to make arrangement for an urgent appointment or contact Nelson or Wairau hospitals for dental afterhours information. Ngā mihi mahana Kirsty Rance Kaiārahi Hauora Niho /Team Leader Community Oral Health Service Nelson Marlborough Reminder NoticesReminder – Harcourts Marlborough Kids Duathlon Entries are open. Go to www.kidsdu.co.nz . The event is open to children from six years of age. A short course and a long course are offered. Run (1km / 2km), Cycle (3km / 5.5km), Run (1km / 1km). Give it a Go! This event has a major influence on supporting our school’s EOTC – School Camping programme, please support it by encouraging family and friends to enter. As part of our fundraising efforts this year, we are also holding another fantastic raffle. Please could families donate a gourmet food item for the ‘Luxury Food Hampers” . Each family is asked to sell at least one sheet of raffle tickets. All proceeds go directly towards the School Camping programme. Please drop off your donated items to the office. Reminder – New Enrolments – In Zone We are asking all ‘in-zone’ parents to check in on any ‘in-zone families’ who have pre-school age children. This is to see if they have enrolled their children into primary school or at least notified a primary school of a potential enrolment. Shortly we will be considering whether or not we have spaces available for any ‘out of zone’ enrolments. We need to confirm our ‘in zone’ numbers in the first instance and so we would appreciate your help here. We ask these people to contact the school as soon as possible. Reminder – New Enrolments 2023 and beyond If you have any children starting school next year or over the next few years please ensure the school is aware of this. Enrolment forms can be requested and collected from the school office. Shortly we will be planning for spaces available for any ‘out of zone’ enrolments and we need to know who is ‘in-zone’ in the first instance. Reminder – End of the School Day – Junior / Senior Playground It is wonderful seeing parents and whānau come back into the school grounds after school to visit classrooms, reconnect with their children’s teachers and view student’s learning. We do ask, however, that you keep your children with you and not allow them to play on the adventure playground. We do not have teachers on duty after school and so only allow bus students to use the main field and tennis courts until the second bus bell rings at around 3.05PM, all other students are expected to be collected after the 2:30 bell. Reminder – Fairhall School App Have you got our Fairhall School App? This can help with keeping up to date on what’s happening at Fairhall and when. Users receive notifications, access to our school newsletters, calendar dates and school contacts. Check out our app features HERE. Download the SchoolAppsNZ now – visit Google Play Store. Once you have downloaded the SchoolAppsNZ – you then search for Fairhall School. Reminder – School donation Each year we ask parents to pay a donation to the school. The donation is $220 per child and can be paid in contribution amounts over the school year or in one lump sum. Your donation helps the school in purchasing resources and hiring personnel to assist with our overall school programmes. In advance I thank you for your contribution. We are privileged to have such a supportive school community in this area of financial support. On Friday the 16th of September, Hannah Kole, Erin Gleeson, Hana Sluiter and Emily Mason represented Fairhall school at Broadgreen Intermediate for the annual literacy quiz. They had around 3 hours to complete questions across 10 different rounds. This literacy quiz was all about a range of book titles, characters, famous quotes, colours of costumes and everything to do with children’s books. Thank you for taking part. FAIRHALL PRIDE Pathway to EXCELLENCE School Goals Our school goals for Term Three focus on the PRIDE values of Integrity and Personal Best. The goals are: At Fairhall School we are learning to be equitable and ethical in the decisions you make, and act on them. (Integrity) and At Fairhall School we are learning to actively seek, use and create knowledge. (Personal Best). The school goals relate to our curriculum topics and at the end of each term we will be looking to celebrate with students who have achieved this goal. School Wide Whakataukiī Each term our kura (school) has a whakataukī that aligns with our school inquiry focus. A whakataukī translates to whakatau (to settle) and kī (say), say something to settle. These proverbs are motivational and offer a unique way to reflect on our place and what we do. This term our school whakatuakī is:I orea te tuatara ka puta ki waho A problem is solved by continuing to find solutions We unpack these whakatuakī at school and relate it back to what we do/can do.
