From the Principal Kia ora koutou. Welcome to Week 8. Nau mai, haere mai ki te wiki o te reo Māori Welcome to Māori Language Week This week we celebrate 50 years since a petition was presented to parliament to kick start the revival of Te Reo Māori. As a school today, students and staff within our own learning and working spaces will be taking a moment to acknowledge the occasion. Perhaps in your own environments you have done the same. Our Year 5 and 6 students are continuing to prepare for their camp to Mistletoe Bay. They have organised a Pizza Day today and judging from the pre-orders they will have raised some funds to help with lowering the cost of their camp in Week 10. Speeches are being presented back to classes in the Years 5 to 8 over the next couple of weeks in preparation of the finals, which will take place on the 21st of September please note this is a change from the originally advertised 20th of September We are busily building up to the end of the term, and look forward to inviting parents into the school as we provide opportunity to do so. We have our Dance Curriculum performance this week, our whānau hui next week, as well as a Kapahaka Kidszone at the end of next week. We will also be finishing the term off with Quality Awards. Dance Curriculum This Friday is our finale to our two-week Dance Curriculum programme. Once again it has been a wonderful experience for all of our students who are looking forward to sharing their moves with you. The performance gets underway at 1.30pm starting with our junior school. If the weather is kind we will be performing out on the front field in front of Te whare Kaihikatea. Enrolment Scheme Notice We are placing an Enrolment Scheme Notice in the local paper today as it has been identified we have a limited number of places for out of zone students for the 2023 school year. The notice calls for parents of IN ZONE pre-schoolers to notify the school before a ballot is drawn if they intend to enrol their child at Fairhall School. Thank you to our parents who have already let us know of families who are in our catchment zone. This has been very helpful over the past week with identifying spaces available. Ngā mihi nui Steve Crockett Principal Reminder Notices Reminder – New Enrolments 2023 and beyond If you have any children starting school next year or over the next few years please ensure the school is aware of this. Enrolment forms can be requested and collected from the school office. Shortly we will be planning for spaces available for any ‘out of zone’ enrolments and we need to know who is ‘in-zone’ in the first instance. Reminder – End of the School Day – Junior / Senior Playground It is wonderful seeing parents and whānau come back into the school grounds after school to visit classrooms, reconnect with their children’s teachers and view student’s learning. We do ask, however, that you keep your children with you and not allow them to play on the adventure playground. We do not have teachers on duty after school and so only allow bus students to use the main field and tennis courts until the second bus bell rings at around 3.05PM, all other students are expected to be collected after the 2:30 bell. Reminder – Fairhall School App Have you got our Fairhall School App? This can help with keeping up to date on what’s happening at Fairhall and when. Users receive notifications, access to our school newsletters, calendar dates and school contacts. Check out our app features HERE. Download the SchoolAppsNZ now – visit Google Play Store. Once you have downloaded the SchoolAppsNZ – you then search for Fairhall School. Reminder – School donation Each year we ask parents to pay a donation to the school. The donation is $220 per child and can be paid in contribution amounts over the school year or in one lump sum. Your donation helps the school in purchasing resources and hiring personnel to assist with our overall school programmes. In advance I thank you for your contribution. We are privileged to have such a supportive school community in this area of financial support. Covid has meant that we have not been able to run a Show Day since October 2019. Show Day is like AMP Shows, only a mini version. It is a Fairhall tradition of animals and flowers with many extras included over the years. This year’s Show Day will take place on Friday 21st October Animal entries are Lambs born on or after 1 August, Calves, Chickens (those ordered through the school), Rabbits and Goats. Indoor entries include Sand saucers, Flowers, Baking, Photography, and Craft items. A criteria schedule and a student entry form will be sent home tomorrow. Please note at what year level indoor entries are entered. Junior: Years 1-3 Middle: Years 4-6 Senior: Years 7-8 Entry forms need to be filled out and returned to classroom teachers by Friday 23rd September. After entries have been recorded entry forms will be returned to students in the last week of term. Students show day number written on the front of the entry form. This show day number is to be used on all students’ entries. Eg: FHJ23 FH = Fairhall J = Junior 23 = Student It is expected that students will have a minimum of two entries in the flower section. The flower arrangements are always completed at school on the day. You don’t have to have a lot of flowers and some students always have plenty to share. It is also very important to follow the criteria set in the schedule, as this is what is used to judge the entries. Lambs, chickens, pullets, rabbits, and goats winning 1st, 2nd, or 3rd at our Show Day, can go on to Group Day. Group Day is a combined rural school’s event were Fairhall Students compete against other Marlborough Country Primary Schools. Some of our winning Indoor Entries, marked with a # in your schedule, are also sent on to Group Day. Students eligible to compete at Group Day will be notified. This year marks the 79th year of the Group Day Event and will take place at Wairau Valley School on Tuesday 1st November. The day starts with students in classrooms before coming together in the courtyard to make Floral entries. After morning tea break animal judging starts and the whole school joins together for fun activities on the field. BBQ lunch will be available, and parents are welcome from morning tea onwards. Watch for a timetable in the newsletter closer to the day. For families new to the school who need more information, we urge you to talk to teachers who have been through a few shows. School Holidays are an ideal opportunity to create indoor entries. You really need to start growing seed heads now if you want them ready for Show Day. School Wide Whakataukiī Each term our kura (school) has a whakataukī that aligns with our school inquiry focus. A whakataukī translates to whakatau (to settle) and kī (say), say something to settle. These proverbs are motivational and offer a unique way to reflect on our place and what we do. This term our school whakatuakī is:I orea te tuatara ka puta ki waho A problem is solved by continuing to find solutions We unpack these whakatuakī at school and relate it back to what we do/can do.
