From the Principal Kia ora koutou. Welcome to week 5. Student-Led Conferences conclude today with all classes having conferences in their rooms after school. We have managed to keep the school open for the full day for both days of the conferences without causing any disruption to teaching and learning. Once again I am impressed by how well the students have prepared themselves for their presentation to you and the effort in preparing them by their teachers. End of the School Day – Junior / Senior Playground It is wonderful seeing parents and whānau come back into the school grounds after school to visit classrooms, reconnect with their children’s teachers and view student’s learning. We do ask, however, that you keep your children with you and not allow them to play on the adventure playground. We do not have teachers on duty after school and so only allow bus students to use the main field and tennis courts until the second bus bell rings at around 3.05PM, all other students are expected to be collected after the 2:30 bell. School Donation / Fees and Subscriptions Firstly, a huge thank you to to most families and whānau who have given their donation to our kura. Without this we would certainly struggle to provide the wonderful learning experiences and opportunities your children receive. We also collect fees and subscriptions on behalf of associations and providers from outside the school for a range of events and activities. This ensures that we provide a wide range of extracurricular activities for your tamariki. Please make sure that any fees or subscriptions are paid in advance of the event as we are often required to pay these prior to the event taking place or start of the season. If there is any difficulty in meeting this request please talk to Jo in the office or make an appointment to see me. We are only too willing to help where we can. Daffodil Day As with tradition we will be celebrating Daffodil Day this coming Friday, 26 August. This is where we dress up in yellow and bring to school a Gold coin donation for the Marlborough Cancer Society. Fairhall School has had a long association with supporting Daffodil Day and the Cancer Society. Our students and families have been fantastic in supporting such a worthy cause and no doubt this will be another valuable time of giving over receiving. Sports Week We normally run a sports week in Terms one and three and this term our sports week has spanned across two weeks in order to provide a range of sports for our students. We have had a number of sporting code coaches come into Fairhall School and take classes for specific skill lessons and this week has been a week for cricket and touch skills. I would like to thank our school’s sports co-ordinator, Anne Taylor, for organising the week. Harcourts Marlborough Kids Duathlon Planning is well underway with this year’s duathlon. A reminder to families that if you have not registered your children for this event to do so sooner rather than later. Also we are still asking for luxury item donations for our raffle. These items can be added to the donation box in the school’s reception area. Ngā mihi nui Steve Crockett Principal From the Board of Trustees Just a reminder about this year’s Board of Trustee Elections. We received six nominations for the three parent trustee positions to be contended this year. You should have already received your voting papers, but if not then please contact Jo in the office. Voting papers should be returned to Jo by 4pm Wednesday 7th September. Also, congratulations to Michael Stringer on becoming the new staff representative on the Board. And a big thank you to Aaron Sangster who steps down following 8 years of representing staff on the Board. Reminder Notices Reminder – Harcourts Marlborough Kids Duathlon Entries are now open. Go to www.kidsdu.co.nz . Enter before 29th August 2022 to be able to order a T-Shirt. Entries after this date are accepted but a T-Shirt cannot be purchased. The event is open to children from six years of age. A short course and a long course are offered. Run (1km / 2km), Cycle (3km / 5.5km), Run (1km / 1km). Give it a Go! This event has a major influence on supporting our school’s EOTC – School Camping programme, please support it by encouraging family and friends to enter. As part of our fundraising efforts this year, we are also holding another fantastic raffle. Please could families donate a gourmet food item for the ‘Luxury Food Hampers” . Each family is asked to sell at least one sheet of raffle tickets. All proceeds go directly towards the School Camping programme. Please drop off your donated items to the office. Reminder – New Enrolments 2023 and beyond If you have any children starting school next year or over the next few years please ensure the school is aware of this. Enrolment forms can be requested and collected from the school office. Shortly we will be planning for spaces available for any ‘out of zone’ enrolments and we need to know who is ‘in-zone’ in the first instance. Reminder – Early Starters With the winter kicking in we are a little concerned about the number of students who do not travel to school by bus but are still arriving at school before 8AM. While we do have staff on-site our teachers are required to use this time in preparation. We are reviewing our policies and procedures around this, however, please ensure your child is dropped off at school between 8.00AM and 8.15AM each morning and not before. Reminder – Fairhall School App Have you got our Fairhall School App? This can help with keeping up to date on what’s happening at Fairhall and when. Users receive notifications, access to our school newsletters, calendar dates and school contacts. Check out our app features HERE. Download the SchoolAppsNZ now – visit Google Play Store. Once you have downloaded the SchoolAppsNZ – you then search for Fairhall School. Reminder – Drop Off Zone Please be aware that the drop off zone is not a space for parents to get out of the car to help students get in or out of cars. If you are using the two parks for drop off then you are expecting your child/children to get out by themselves and come into school. If you are using the two parks for pick-up then your child/children are ready and waiting to get into your car by themselves. Reminder – Picking Up students after school We ask that you do not stop to collect your children in the driveway between the Bus Zone and the Drop Off Zone. The middle gate for crossing the road is not a pick-up zone and needs to be kept free to allow traffic to flow. Our Drop Off Zone has spaces for two vehicles only. If you are the third vehicle please move on into an angle parking spaces to let vehicles through. Reminder – Student Success Please let the school know if your child has achieved some amazing results outside of school life. We would love to celebrate this at school with our classes and within our Fairhall School community. Often our tamariki do some amazing things that don’t get noticed or mentioned in the local media or are overly humble and do not tell us. Feel free to let us know when something great has happened. Reminder – Kidszone Friday Kidzone is our weekly school assembly, run by the ‘kids’. Parents and whānau are welcome to join us in Te Whare Kahikatea, at 8.40AM. We do recommend that parents attending wear a mask. School Wide Whakataukiī Each term our kura (school) has a whakataukī that aligns with our school inquiry focus. A whakataukī translates to whakatau (to settle) and kī (say), say something to settle. These proverbs are motivational and offer a unique way to reflect on our place and what we do. This term our school whakatuakī is: I orea te tuatara ka puta ki waho A problem is solved by continuing to find solutions We unpack these whakatuakī at school and relate it back to what we do/can do.
