From the Principal Kia ora koutou. Welcome to week 4. This week there has been a considerably high number of illnesses with students and staff across the school. At a peak on Tuesday we had 57 students and 5 staff members absent. Most of these are flu and cold related. While we battle through this winter let’s all be mindful of everyone’s health and well-being. Keep warm, practice good hygiene and stay at home if unwell. End of the School Day – Year 1 to 4 classes We are wanting to welcome parents back on to the school grounds and into classrooms before the start of school, and at the end of the school day. To encourage this to happen, teachers of Year’s 1 to 4 will release their students from their classes when the bell rings at 2.30pm. Teachers will no longer bring their students out to the front gate. Parents are welcome to either remain at the gate or come into the school to collect their children. Please arrange with your children what you expect of them. You are welcome to enter into classrooms to view what your children have been learning and reconnect with your children’s teachers. If you are going to enter classrooms we still encourage parents to wear a mask while indoors. This is to take effect from tomorrow. Student Led Conferences This year all classes will be moving to conducting Student-Led Conferences. They will take place on August 23 and 24 in Week 5. In student-led conferences, the student takes the central role during discussions. The teacher is involved but is not necessarily sitting with the student and parents all of the time. There might be four or five groupings of parents and students discussing their work in a classroom, and the teacher acts as the facilitator and prompter where necessary. Some schools set up stations, often for the younger students, where students and their parents move around looking at different aspects of learning. Student-led conferences are designed to achieve one or more of the following goals: to help students demonstrate evidence of learning . to teach students the process of reflection and self-evaluation to facilitate the development of students’ organisational and oral communication skills to increase students’ self-confidence to encourage students, parents, and teachers to engage in open and honest dialogue to encourage students to accept personal responsibility for their learning to increase parent understanding of their child’s learning through improving attendance at and satisfaction with the reporting process. andTo book your time for your child’s conference click on the link and follow the instructions http://www.schoolinterviews.co.nz/code/6a5g7 Cross Country Congratulations to our District Cross Country team for their effort at this year’s races. Our Year 7 and 8 competitors had to miss out this year but our Year 5 and 6 teams carried our flag and did Fairhall school proud. A huge congratulations to Archie Bray and Will Dunne. Archie won the Year 5 boys race and becomes our Marlborough Champion while Will finished a credible 8th in the same event. Once again our school’s Sports Co-ordinator, Anne Taylor, organised a well run event. Year 7&8 Camp We welcome back our senior students who spent last week at Teapot Valley and had a wonderful camp experience. A big thank you to our parent helpers who supported our teaching staff for this camp. Our Year 8’s can now look forward to their Abel Tasman National Park tramp and their final journey before ending their time at Fairhall. Dance Curriculum We will be running our school’s biennial dance programme over the last two weeks of this term. This is where we bring in dance professionals to take each class through a series of lessons and routines with the culmination of a whole school dance performance presented to our community. The cost for this is $30 per student. Payment for this can be made at any time from now until the end of the term. This event has a major influence on supporting our school’s EOTC – School Camping programme, please support it by encouraging family and friends to enter. As part of our fundraising efforts this year, we are also holding another fantastic raffle. Please could families donate a gourmet food item for the ‘Luxury Food Hampers” . Each family is asked to sell at least one sheet of raffle tickets. All proceeds go directly towards the School Camping programme. Please drop off your donated items to the office. Reminder – New Enrolments 2023 and beyond If you have any children starting school next year or over the next few years please ensure the school is aware of this. Enrolment forms can be requested and collected from the school office. Shortly we will be planning for spaces available for any ‘out of zone’ enrolments and we need to know who is ‘in-zone’ in the first instance. Reminder – Early Starters With the winter kicking in we are a little concerned about the number of students who do not travel to school by bus but are still arriving at school before 8AM. While we do have staff on-site our teachers are required to use this time in preparation. We are reviewing our policies and procedures around this, however, please ensure your child is dropped off at school between 8.00AM and 8.15AM each morning and not before. Reminder – Fairhall School App Have you got our Fairhall School App? This can help with keeping up to date on what’s happening at Fairhall and when. Users receive notifications, access to our school newsletters, calendar dates and school contacts. Check out our app features HERE. Download the SchoolAppsNZ now – visit Google Play Store. Once you have downloaded the SchoolAppsNZ – you then search for Fairhall School. Reminder – Drop Off Zone Please be aware that the drop off zone is not a space for parents to get out of the car to help students get in or out of cars. If you are using the two parks for drop off then you are expecting your child/children to get out by themselves and come into school. If you are using the two parks for pick-up then your child/children are ready and waiting to get into your car by themselves. Reminder – Picking Up students after school We ask that you do not stop to collect your children in the driveway between the Bus Zone and the Drop Off Zone. The middle gate for crossing the road is not a pick-up zone and needs to be kept free to allow traffic to flow. Our Drop Off Zone has spaces for two vehicles only. If you are the third vehicle please move on into an angle parking spaces to let vehicles through. Reminder – Student Success Please let the school know if your child has achieved some amazing results outside of school life. We would love to celebrate this at school with our classes and within our Fairhall School community. Often our tamariki do some amazing things that don’t get noticed or mentioned in the local media or are overly humble and do not tell us. Feel free to let us know when something great has happened. Reminder – Kidszone Friday Kidzone is our weekly school assembly, run by the ‘kids’. Parents and whānau are welcome to join us in our new multi-purpose space, Te Whare Kahikatea, at 8.40AM. We do recommend that parents attending wear a mask. School Wide Whakataukiī Each term our kura (school) has a whakataukī that aligns with our school inquiry focus. A whakataukī translates to whakatau (to settle) and kī (say), say something to settle. These proverbs are motivational and offer a unique way to reflect on our place and what we do. This term our school whakatuakī is: I orea te tuatara ka puta ki waho A problem is solved by continuing to find solutions We unpack these whakatuakī at school and relate it back to what we do/can do.
