From the Principal Kia ora koutou. We are into the final week of the school term and it has been a busy one. Most pleasing has been the opening of the school gates and welcoming whānau kura back into the school to celebrate the wonderful mahi that has been going on at Fairhall. We look forward to continuing this in Term 4. Year 5 and 6 Camp – Mistletoe Bay Our middle school students cruised into the Marlborough Sounds yesterday for their camp to Mistletoe Bay. Finally we get to have this camp after it had to be cancelled in 2021. Already it looks like everyone is having a ‘fun time’. Festival of Hockey Congratulations to our Year 3 and 4 students who took part in the Festival of Hockey held last week. It was reported the students had a wonderful event mixing in with students from other schools. Thank you to all parents who gave up their time to support. Harcourts Marlborough Kids Duathlon What a successful event! It was great to see so many people out enjoying being part of this wonderful ‘feel good’ sporting event for our tamariki. It has been a long two – year wait. A huge thank you to the organising committee led by parent, Anna Dunne. So many have given up their time to make this happen and we also can’t thank enough the support and sponsorship we get from the team at Harcourts. Of course there are also a number of other amazing sponsors and helpers that we wish to acknowledge and this is provided within this newsletter. Thank You Marlborough Tree Care We would like to acknowledge and kindly thank a significant donation from local company Marlborough Tree Care. Matt and his team generously delivered a truckload of mulch to school for use on our new and existing gardens. This is going to make a difference to our school. Please remember this local business when you are looking for tree services. Matt can be contacted by mobile on 0275628899 and email at matt@marlboroughtreecare.co.nz Also a special thank you to parents Nikki and Duncan Grigg for making this donation possible. Tō tātou Whakawhitinga Pukapuka – Our Book Exchange A couple of weeks ago our Enviro Council launched ‘Tō tātou Whakawhitinga Pukapuka – Our Book Exchange’. This is a book exchange that is permanently located in the centre of our school for all the students and wider community to use and enjoy. Simple swap an unwanted book you have at home for a new one. The book exchange is full of great books ready to be swapped. It has been great to see it being used the last two weeks. Come in and check it out, and while you’re there ‘swap a book’. Ngā mihi nui Steve Crockett Principal From the Board of Trustees Following the recent triennial board elections, we’re very pleased to welcome Rachel Roundhill as a new parent trustee on the board. Rachel comes with some great experience, particularly with her education background and ownership of Montessori Blenheim. Clive Dougall and myself return as parent trustees and we are also very pleased to have Michael Stringer join us as the school’s new staff representative. Thank you to the other parents who put their name forward for the election and it’s great to see such a strong level of engagement from the community. Also a special thank you to retiring trustees Chris Grage and Aaron Sangster for all their valuable input over the last few years. Following the announcement of Mr Crockett’s retirement from the end of the year, the board has established an Appointment Committee for the purpose of running a fair and robust search and selection process for the recruitment of our new principal. The committee comprises myself, Anna O’Hagan, Chris Grage, Katie Bradley & Tim Oughton. As well as being a school parent, Katie also represents staff and the senior leadership team of the school. Tim Oughton is a well-respected former principal and current principal recruitment and development consultant. Tim has been included on the committee as an independent professional advisor to help us through this critical process for our kura. The Appointment Committee will provide the Board of Trustees with a written recommendation for the most appropriate candidate, with the final appointment decision remaining with the Board of Trustees. This is the most important and far-reaching decision the board will make during its current tenure and we look forward to a very positive outcome. Our whānau hui was held last week and it was great to see and hear about the fantastic achievements of the last year, as well as sharing many new ideas for the coming year and beyond. The Cultural Diversity Team has done some amazing mahi and a very warm ngā mihi nui to Vanessa Anderson. Also a very big thank you to Jenny Saggers who recently stepped down as chairperson of Friends of Fairhall School (FOFS). FOFS do some amazing work for our school and the Fairhall community and Jenny has been actively involved with FOFS and the school generally for many years. Finally, as Steve mentioned above, it was great to see the return of the Harcourts Marlborough Kids Duathlon in the weekend following the disruptions of the last couple of years. This is the school’s major fundraiser for supporting our amazing EOTC programme and particularly for our triennial Tongariro Tramp. Thank you to everyone who helped make this such a great event. Steve Ross Chairperson Fairhall School BoT Reminder Notices Reminder – End of the School Day – Junior / Senior Playground It is wonderful seeing parents and whānau come back into the school grounds after school to visit classrooms, reconnect with their children’s teachers and view student’s learning. We do ask, however, that you keep your children with you and not allow them to play on the adventure playground. We do not have teachers on duty after school and so only allow bus students to use the main field and tennis courts until the second bus bell rings at around 3.05PM, all other students are expected to be collected after the 2:30 bell. Reminder – Fairhall School App Have you got our Fairhall School App? This can help with keeping up to date on what’s happening at Fairhall and when. Users receive notifications, access to our school newsletters, calendar dates and school contacts. Check out our app features HERE. Download the SchoolAppsNZ now – visit Google Play Store. Once you have downloaded the SchoolAppsNZ – you then search for Fairhall School. Reminder – School donation Each year we ask parents to pay a donation to the school. The donation is $220 per child and can be paid in contribution amounts over the school year or in one lump sum. Your donation helps the school in purchasing resources and hiring personnel to assist with our overall school programmes. In advance I thank you for your contribution. We are privileged to have such a supportive school community in this area of financial support. The school goals relate to our curriculum topics and at the end of each term we will be looking to celebrate with students who have achieved this goal. School Wide Whakataukiī Each term our kura (school) has a whakataukī that aligns with our school inquiry focus. A whakataukī translates to whakatau (to settle) and kī (say), say something to settle. These proverbs are motivational and offer a unique way to reflect on our place and what we do. This term our school whakatuakī is:I orea te tuatara ka puta ki waho A problem is solved by continuing to find solutions We unpack these whakatuakī at school and relate it back to what we do/can do.
