From the Principal Kia ora koutou. Welcome to Week 7. We are truly into the winter months and unfortunately the ‘not so good’ weather is causing closures of sport grounds and courts. Hopefully things will settle over the next week and our teams can then get out and play. Thank you to all of our sports coaches who continue to battle the elements to support our teams with practices and team organisation. Preparations are underway for acknowledging and celebrating Matariki as a public holiday, next Friday. As a school we are recognising Matariki with a school event on Thursday 23 June. A notice regarding this has been sent out to families / whanau and is attached further in the newsletter. Matariki signifies the start of the Māori new year and is identified by the Matariki cluster of stars that appear in the night sky around this time of year. Matariki enables us all to reflect on the past and the present, while also planning for the future. See the invitation below. COVID-19 / Flu update Well it had to happen!! Last week I spoke too soon and as a consequence we had six COVID cases reported across classrooms within the school and another 3 cases of a vomiting bug. Parents of the rooms concerned have been notified and we ask parents to be extra vigilant around potential norovirus or COVID cases. With that I have provided Ministry of Health information HERE. Please pay particular attention to information on the Prevention tab as we do not wish to have an outbreak at school and I’m sure you would not wish this as well. The school will be applying the Ministry of Health guidelines in these circumstances. Please be proactive and keep your children at home, test when necessary and remain at home for the required isolation period. Congratulations We congratulate Tia Kyle, Hemione Roach and Freya Roach for their success last weekend at the Canterbury/West Coast Centre Highland Dancing Competition held in Christchurch. Tia was successful receiving Ribbons and Rosettes for her performance, Hemione won the U12 age group and Freya was placed in the U10 age group. Well done girls. Also of note was the performance of former Fairhall student Chloe Kyle, who won the U16 age group event. A successful weekend for the Kyle/Roach clan. Congratulations also to our Fairhall Federer Division 3A Tennis team. At Prize-giving last week the team of Harry and Violet Speakman, Jake and Maggie Clarke, Ben Storey and Erin Gleeson received the Runner-up prize for the 2021/22 season. Well done team. Jumping June This Friday the whole school is involved in Jumping June and will be out on the courts from 10.15AM through to 12.15PM. Deputy Principal, Aaron Sangster has organised a wonderful range of activities for the school to get involved with in support of the Heart Foundation. Stations will be set up for the students to engage in a range of activities to show off their skipping skills. Parents are welcome to pop into school to see the children in action. Once again, our community has been amazingly generous with supporting this Heart Foundation fund-raiser. Caretaker Position We are in the process of advertising for a new caretaker. Unfortunately, our wonderful Caretaker, Rob Waldron, is heading back down south. Rob has been a fantastic staff member during his time with us, doing a wonderful job in caring for our school environment. He will be missed. Camps and Tramps In preparation for our up and coming camps to Tongariro, Teapot Valley, Mistletoe Bay and Abel Tasman parents will be receiving quite a lot of information including permission and health forms over the next month. We ask that you respond to requests or forms so that we can confirm these events will take place. Thank you to those who have returned forms already. Teachers will be requesting parent helper support for these camps so please respond by the dates given if you would like to be considered for helping. We will endeavour to confirm our camp helpers as soon as possible so that you can organise your calendars for the practice tramps involved. Organisation for our Year 4 Camp to Pine Valley will begin next term. Ngā mihi nui Steve Crockett Principal Jumping June Friday This Friday we will celebrate our Jumping June Fundraiser. To date this has been a massive success and we have raised nearly $14,000 dollars! On Friday (weather permitting) between 10:15 and 12:15 we will be holding a range of skipping activities and events for the children. Whānau are more than welcome to come along (you can even bring your skipping ropes!) We are wanting to make it a big colour team event so if children could wear their house colours that would be most appreciated. Note it is not a dress up day as kids will need maximum mobility for all the jumping! Okaramio = Yellow Waihopai = Blue Rarangi = Green Omaka = Red If your child doesn’t know their colour team please make sure they ask their teacher before Friday. We also have colour team T-Shirts available for sale at the office for $12. If it is wet/ raining we will have modified events throughout the day in Te Whare Kahikatea (Our new Multi purpose space) Keep practicing! Let’s have a Jump Tastic Friday! Matariki at Te Kura o Fairhall 6.45am, Thursday 23rd June 2022 Fairhall School would like to invite you to celebrate Matariki on Thursday 23rd June. At 6.45am we will meet in Kahikatea (our new multi-purpose space) at school. We will start our celebrations by aiming to view the cluster of stars known as ‘Matariki’ on our school field before sunrise. Following this there will be the opportunity to have breakfast together. This will be a basic breakfast; cereals, fruits and toast, along with hot drinks. If anyone is happy to help with the serving of breakfast on the day, this would be greatly appreciated. Please let Jo know when you RSVP if you can help out. The children will then be able to stay for their school day, where there will be continued celebrations including school-wide singing, playing of traditional Māori games and getting creative with some visual arts. If your whānau (family) intend to join us for the viewing of Matariki and breakfast, please RSVP to Jo (jo@fairhall.school.nz) before Monday 20th June. Matariki hunga, Matariki ahunga nui. Matariki has many admirers, Matariki brings us together. Reminder Notices Reminder – Early Starters With the winter kicking in we are a little concerned about the number of students who do not travel to school by bus but are still arriving at school before 8AM. While we do have staff on-site our teachers are required to use this time in preparation. We are reviewing our policies and procedures around this, however, please ensure your child is dropped off at school between 8.00AM and 8.15AM each morning and not before. Reminder – Fairhall School App Have you got our Fairhall School App? This can help with keeping up to date on what’s happening at Fairhall and when. Users receive notifications, access to our school newsletters, calendar dates and school contacts. Check out our app features HERE. Download the SchoolAppsNZ now – visit Google Play Store. Once you have downloaded the SchoolAppsNZ – you then search for Fairhall School. Reminder – Drop Off Zone Please be aware that the drop off zone is not a space for parents to get out of the car to help students get in or out of cars. If you are using the two parks for drop off then you are expecting your child/children to get out by themselves and come into school. If you are using the two parks for pick-up then your child/children are ready and waiting to get into your car by themselves. Reminder – Picking Up students after school We ask that you do not stop to collect your children in the driveway between the Bus Zone and the Drop Off Zone. The middle gate for crossing the road is not a pick-up zone and needs to be kept free to allow traffic to flow. Our Drop Off Zone has spaces for two vehicles only. If you are the third vehicle please move on into an angle parking spaces to let vehicles through. Reminder – Student Success Please let the school know if your child has achieved some amazing results outside of school life. We would love to celebrate this at school with our classes and within our Fairhall School community. Often our tamariki do some amazing things that don’t get noticed or mentioned in the local media or are overly humble and do not tell us. Feel free to let us know when something great has happened. Reminder – Kidszone Friday Kidzone is our weekly school assembly, run by the ‘kids’. Parents are welcome to join us in our new multi-purpose space, Kahikatea, at 8.40AM. We do recommend that parents attending wear a mask. The goals are: At Fairhall School we are learning to aim high and don’t give up, despite set-backs and difficulties. (Determination) and At Fairhall School we are learning to show a positive attitude and participate appropriately. (Enjoyment). The school goals relate to our curriculum topics and at the end of each term we will be looking to celebrate with students who have achieved this goal. School Wide Whakataukiī Each term our kura (school) has a whakataukī that aligns with our school inquiry focus. A whakataukī translates to whakatau (to settle) and kī (say), say something to settle. These proverbs are motivational and offer a unique way to reflect on our place and what we do. This term our school whakatuakī is: Manaaki whenua, manaaki tangata, haere whakamua. Care for the land, care for the people, move forward. We unpack these whakatuakī at school and relate it back to what we do/can do.
