From the Principal Kia ora koutou. Welcome to Week 5. We also welcome back Jo McConnell, who returns to the school office following leave of absence to visit her daughter and new grand-daughter. We thank Joy Neal, who has been keeping the school ticking over in Jo’s absence. Keeping Winter Bugs At Bay! As a school we have done reasonably well with keeping COVID 19 away and as we move through winter we would like to continue this with all bugs and illnesses that come our way, including influenza. The minimising of movement into and around the school and the wearing of face masks has helped keep things at bay, as well as the diligence of parents in keeping children at home when they are unwell and reporting to the school your child’s sickness. Thank you for your support here. Let’s continue this positive proactive approach to health and well-being over these winter months. Mid-Year Reporting Teachers are underway with preparation for Mid Year Reports. Currently we report to parents twice each year. These written reports focus on your child’s current learning level in relation to the New Zealand Curriculum Learning Levels. The reports also give you information on what your child knows, what are their next learning steps and how you can help at home with your child’s learning and progress. The reports also share teacher judgement’s on your child’s effort and response to the Key Competencies. Key competencies are the capabilities people have, and need to develop, to live and learn today and in the future. Mid-Year and End of Year Reporting form part of the school’s overall reporting process. Another part of the process is to hold Parent / Teacher meetings, which we have done at the end of last term, and Student Led / 3-Way Conferences, which will take place early Term 3. I will explain these at the start of the term. We trust that you find our reporting process helpful in understanding the learning and well-being of your child as they progress through Fairhall School. Parking Along New Renwick Road It has been brought to my attention that a growing number of parents are parking along the school side of New Renwick Road and this is inhibiting the vision of drivers leaving the eastern end of the carpark. We would prefer all parents to drive in and use our school carpark in the first instance and if full then park in the spaces across the road in the Community Hall carpark. Please give this some consideration if this is where you have been parking. An Invitation to Whanau This coming Monday we will be sending out an invitation to all Fairhall Parents with opportunity to attend a Te Reo Workshop after school from parent and kaiako for Te Ataarangi ki Te Tau Ihu o Te Waka ā Māui, Vanessa Anderson. Vanessa has been working with staff and students from Fairhall School for a number of years now and this will be a wonderful opportunity to extend an invitation out to our parent community. School Photos We would like to get all school photos sorted out by the end of this week. If you still have photos at home please pay for these or return them to school by Friday 3 June. Thank you. Tongariro Camp Meeting – Year 5, 6 and 7 Parents We will be holding a camp meeting for this year’s Year 5, 6 and 7 parents in Kahikatea (our new multi-purpose space) next Wednesday evening, 8 June at 7PM. All parents of students within these year groups are asked to attend. NO RSVP required. Thank you to those who have already sent in an apology. Harcourts Marlborough Kids Duathlon Thank you to all who attended or responded with an apology to the HMKD AGM which was held at school last Tuesday. The Kids Duathlon is a vital fund-raising event for the school and assists with subsidising the cost of most of our school camps. It was pleasing to see the support being maintained at the AGM. The good news is that we are going ahead with the planning for this and a ‘first’ planning meeting is to take place in the school staffroom on Monday 13 June, starting at 7PM. Please add this date and time to your calendar to get involved. Ngā mihi nui Steve Crockett Principal Reminder Notices Reminder – Early Starters With the winter kicking in we are a little concerned about the number of students who do not travel to school by bus but are still arriving at school before 8AM. While we do have staff on-site our teachers are required to use this time in preparation. We are reviewing our policies and procedures around this, however, please ensure your child is dropped off at school between 8.00AM and 8.15AM each morning and not before. Reminder – Fairhall School App Have you got our Fairhall School App? This can help with keeping up to date on what’s happening at Fairhall and when. Users receive notifications, access to our school newsletters, calendar dates and school contacts. Check out our app features HERE. Download the SchoolAppsNZ now – visit Google Play Store. Once you have downloaded the SchoolAppsNZ – you then search for Fairhall School. Reminder – Drop Off Zone Please be aware that the drop off zone is not a space for parents to get out of the car to help students get in or out of cars. If you are using the two parks for drop off then you are expecting your child/children to get out by themselves and come into school. If you are using the two parks for pick-up then your child/children are ready and waiting to get into your car by themselves. Reminder – Picking Up students after school We ask that you do not stop to collect your children in the driveway between the Bus Zone and the Drop Off Zone. The middle gate for crossing the road is not a pick-up zone and needs to be kept free to allow traffic to flow. Our Drop Off Zone has spaces for two vehicles only. If you are the third vehicle please move on into an angle parking spaces to let vehicles through. Reminder – Student Success Please let the school know if your child has achieved some amazing results outside of school life. We would love to celebrate this at school with our classes and within our Fairhall School community. Often our tamariki do some amazing things that don’t get noticed or mentioned in the local media or are overly humble and do not tell us. Feel free to let us know when something great has happened. Reminder – Kidszone Friday Kidzone is our weekly school assembly, run by the ‘kids’. Parents are welcome to join us in our new multi-purpose space, Kahikatea, at 8.40AM. We do recommend that parents attending wear a mask. (Determination) and At Fairhall School we are learning to show a positive attitude and participate appropriately. (Enjoyment). The school goals relate to our curriculum topics and at the end of each term we will be looking to celebrate with students who have achieved this goal. School Wide Whakataukiī Each term our kura (school) has a whakataukī that aligns with our school inquiry focus. A whakataukī translates to whakatau (to settle) and kī (say), say something to settle. These proverbs are motivational and offer a unique way to reflect on our place and what we do. This term our school whakatuakī is: Manaaki whenua, manaaki tangata, haere whakamua. Care for the land, care for the people, move forward. We unpack these whakatuakī at school and relate it back to what we do/can do.
