From the Principal Kia ora koutou. Welcome to Week 3. This week we are starting to feel the bite of winter with some cold morning starts. Students are well settled into their classroom programmes. This week our teachers have our Mathematics Professional Learning development facilitator, Sarah Cobb, back with us for 3 days working alongside teachers in the classroom and with staff after school. We are continuing to build teacher and leadership capability across the school in the subject of Mathematics and hope to share some pleasing results in the near future World Day for Cultural Diversity This Friday we will be celebrating ‘World Day for Cultural Diversity’ under the theme ‘we are all unique but together we are a masterpiece’. Classes will be celebrating all things that make us unique and there will be special focuses on music, art and performance throughout the day. Teacher, Michael Stringer, has arranged to have Vita Vaka from Fua Creative (www.fuacreative.com) coming on the day to give the students a Pacifika experience. Vita will run 4 sessions at our school on this day. We ask if your child could contribute a koha (donation) of $2 to help contribute to having Vita and his team at school on the day. Your child is welcome to come dressed in something to represent their background and culture on the day should they wish. We look forward to celebrating all cultures, and especially the cultures within our Fairhall School community. School Office Unattended For the next two weeks the school office will be unattended in the afternoons from 12.30PM to 4.30PM. Please ensure all arrangements for your children are made before they come to school each day. Friends of Fairhall School – FOFS Friends of Fairhall School (FOFS) is a committee made up of parents, caregivers and volunteers that are connected to Fairhall School through current students at the school, or through the wider Fairhall Community. FOFS is an important link between the school, community and the Fairhall School Board of Trustees. WHAT DOES FOFS DO? FOFS has many major roles at the school: – Fundraising for the school. – Offer pastoral care to the Fairhall School students, families and community. – Support the school by running food stalls at school events such as show days and cross country days – Create a group where families can meet each other and be engaged with the school days of their children. You can read more about FOFS on our school website. Like any support and volunteering organisation it takes a dedicated team of people to ensure that our role and purpose within the school’s community is sustainable. FOFS NEEDS YOU!! If you would like to know more about FOFS or would like to be part of this important team please let the school office know and we can connect you with the right people. No matter how small a contribution of time, we will be open to any support. Congratulations We congratulate Harry Speakman for his recent success at the Marlborough Open Table Tannis Tournament last weekend. Harry was runner-up in the 13 Year’s Doubles Table Tennis Tournament and has been selected to join the Marlborough Junior Table Tennis training squad. Well Done Harry. From the Prospectus Since the start of the new school year I have been sending you excerpts from our current school prospectus. This is given out to all new families on enrolment of their child at Fairhall School and can be viewed on our website www.fairhall.school.nz . Hopefully this will keep you informed of the day-to-day running of the school and processes we would like parents to follow, as well as, supporting the school. This is the final section of the prospectus. If you find that there is more information you would like to know please contact the school office so we can continually update our prospectus and keep our community well informed. Sunsmart We are a sunsmart accredited school. All students are required to wear a sunhat in Terms 1 and 4 during lunch and play breaks at school and when involved in outdoor school activities. Student Homebooks Each student in the junior area of the school has a Reading Log. This is used for home and school communication and to record homework requirements where necessary. Teachers will use it to contact parents, or parents to contact teachers. Make sure you use it – maybe to inform us of a change in transport arrangements or reason for absence etc. Telephone The school telephone is available for messages to teachers and students (within reason). Students need their classroom teacher’s permission to use the school phone. Transport As we are a country school we rely on parents and staff members to provide most of the transport to various extra functions and activities that we consider important for the education of the children in the school. Please make yourself available for this activity when you can. Ngā mihi nui Steve Crockett Principal Reminder Notices Reminder – Early Starters With the winter kicking in we are a little concerned about the number of students who do not travel to school by bus but are still arriving at school before 8AM. While we do have staff on-site our teachers are required to use this time in preparation. We are reviewing our policies and procedures around this, however, please ensure your child is dropped off at school between 8.00AM and 8.15AM each morning and not before. Reminder – Fairhall School App Have you got our Fairhall School App? This can help with keeping up to date on what’s happening at Fairhall and when. Users receive notifications, access to our school newsletters, calendar dates and school contacts. Check out our app features HERE. Download the SchoolAppsNZ now – visit Google Play Store. Once you have downloaded the SchoolAppsNZ – you then search for Fairhall School. Reminder – Drop Off Zone Please be aware that the drop off zone is not a space for parents to get out of the car to help students get in or out of cars. If you are using the two parks for drop off then you are expecting your child/children to get out by themselves and come into school. If you are using the two parks for pick-up then your child/children are ready and waiting to get into your car by themselves. Reminder – Picking Up students after school We ask that you do not stop to collect your children in the driveway between the Bus Zone and the Drop Off Zone. The middle gate for crossing the road is not a pick-up zone and needs to be kept free to allow traffic to flow. Our Drop Off Zone has spaces for two vehicles only. If you are the third vehicle please move on into an angle parking spaces to let vehicles through. Reminder – School donation Each year we ask parents to pay a donation to the school. The donation is $220 per child and can be paid in contribution amounts over the school year or in one lump sum. Your donation helps the school in purchasing resources and hiring personnel to assist with our overall school programmes. In advance I thank you for your contribution. We are privileged to have such a supportive school community in this area of financial support. Reminder – Student Success Please let the school know if your child has achieved some amazing results outside of school life. We would love to celebrate this at school with our classes and within our Fairhall School community. Often our tamariki do some amazing things that don’t get noticed or mentioned in the local media or are overly humble and do not tell us. Feel free to let us know when something great has happened. Reminder – Kidszone Friday Kidzone is our weekly school assembly, run by the ‘kids’. Parents are welcome to join us in our new multi-purpose space, Kahikatea, at 8.40AM. We do recommend that parents attending wear a mask. NOTICE OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF FAIRHALL FUNDRAISING INC. 7PM 24TH MAY 2022 FAIRHALL SCHOOL STAFF ROOM The committee invite you to our annual general meeting to confirm the upcoming major fundraiser of the Harcourts Marlborough Kids duathlon. Without a committee being formed this event will not be able to take place. Some longstanding committee members are stepping down this year and we need your help to form a committee and make this event happen. This event in past years has raised $13000-$15000. To date we have not had anyone offer to be chairperson so the event is at risk of not being able to be run which would have a flow on effect of the event being cancelled. Harcourts have agreed to continue on as our major sponsor. Please give this opportunity some consideration and contact me on 0274895801 or email philandannag@gmail.com for further information. Thanks Anna Gleeson A very happy birthday wish to Marlee Greenaway – 19 May, Harley Sangster – 22 May and Archie Saggers & Olivia Elworthy – 25 May. We hope you all have a fantastic day. School Wide Whakataukiī Each term our kura (school) has a whakataukī that aligns with our school inquiry focus. A whakataukī translates to whakatau (to settle) and kī (say), say something to settle. These proverbs are motivational and offer a unique way to reflect on our place and what we do. This term our school whakatuakī is: Manaaki whenua, manaaki tangata, haere whakamua. Care for the land, care for the people, move forward. We unpack these whakatuakī at school and relate it back to what we do/can do.
