Term 3
Edible Garden
Welcome back to Term 3. While it has been a cold wet week we managed to get back into the gardens with a lesson on Photosynthesis (Pho-to-syn-the-sis) – a very tricky word!!
While we ate some delicious carrots from the garden we watched a short video to help us to understand what photosynthesis is.
Here is what we found out…….
- Leaves have tiny openings in them called stomatas
- The plants release oxygen through their leaves
- Water enters a plant through its roots
- Carbon dioxide enters the plant through its leaves (stomata)
- Plants take the bad carbon dioxide and convert it to sugar / glucose
- Plants need these glucose or sugars to thrive
- People and animals need oxygen to live
- The plants leaves absorb light from the sun
Chloroplasts use photosynthesis to turn sunlight into food
- Chloroplasts are green because they contain the green pigment chlorophyll
